Having an Accident Book

It is a legal requirement for companies to have an accident book. Many people are not convinced that they are worthwhile, but there are lots of reasons why they are good and they could be used.

If employees write down every injury that they have sustained in the work place, the book can be a useful resource for managers or company owners to use in order to improve the working environment. If there is a trend in the accidents that people have then it may highlight a training need for a particular piece of equipment or show that it should be replaced with something safer.

If you are an employee then it is important for you to write in the book for the same reasons. You want to be able to show the company where the hazards lie in the workplace in the hope that they will then do something about it. It can also serve another purpose for employees.

This purpose is if you decide to make an accident at work compensation claim. You may decide that your injury is serious enough to do this and if it was not your own fault then you are legally entitled to do so. The record in the accident book, will show when the accident took place and could be used as evidence in court. If you do not write in it, then it may be felt that the accident could easily have happened at another time because there was no record in the book and this could stop you from getting the compensation that you are entitled to. It is therefore very important to make sure you not only note down the accident and when it happened but describe the injury in detail.

Therefore an accident book can benefit by employees and employer and it is important for both that it is used correctly.
